Uganda

Context

The Naguru slum where the social school will be located do not comply with minimum humanitarian standards set for access to water, shelter, sanitation and education. A significant number of children are not accessing this right. As much as the school provides an education, parents and guardians are left the responsibility to provide food for their children.

As as a consequence, many children go without food, affecting their health, academic and social life. This situation has been aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected the country and forced the government to close all schools for almost two years. The closure of schools also disturbed the normal socialization of most of the children creating additional distress.

Whilst in the community, some children have also been exposed to lack of information, sexual and gender-based violence both at home and in the community, teenage pregnancies, HIV& AIDS, and many hygiene related illnesses. The lack of a protective environment in the community has greatly affected the children and young people in the community and there is need for stakeholders to provide sustainable solutions to their education and social needs.

The project: MTN Naguru Social Sports Academy

The project: MTN Naguru Social Sports Academy

The Xcalibur Foundation, together with the Real Madrid Foundation and MTN Uganda, has implemented the first social sports school in Uganda.

The social sports academy hosts 166 boys and girls aged between 5 and 16 years old, in vulnerable situations. The project includes the participation of boys and girls with special needs.  Its aim is to provide social and educational training to the beneficiaries, focusing on the main values of personal growth and sport, accompanied by the practice of sports and the learning of soccer.

Youth Sport Uganda, our local partner on the field, is in charge of the running of the project on a daily basis. Through sport, games, coaching support, as well as community awareness, the project aims to influence three different levels: children, youth and the wider community (families, guardians and caregivers, teachers, international/local organizations and government).

The project takes place at Naguru Katali Primary School in Nakawa District, Kampala. The school’s coaches, social worker and teachers have been trained under the Real Madrid Foundation’s unique and pioneering methodology of values education: “For a real education: Values and Sport”. These activities seek to improve the life skills of the beneficiaries and will address issues such as well-being, safety and security, conflict management, gender equality, disability, and inclusion, to foster their positive development.
