Opening ceremony of Xcalibur Foundation’s MTN Naguru Social Sports Academy in Uganda

On June 29th, Xcalibur Foundation celebrated the official opening ceremony of its first project worldwide: the MTN Social Naguru Social Sports Academy. Together with Real Madrid Foundation, MTN Uganda, and Youth Sports Uganda (YSU), the latter as the implementing partner on the ground, the MTN Naguru Social Sports Academy was launched at Naguru Katali Primary School in Kampala (Uganda) This initiative initially targets a group of 160 girls, boys, and youth between the ages of 5 and 16. The main objective is to use football as a pedagogical and motivational tool to bring us closer to the beneficiaries, conveying life skills and values, reinforcing the importance of education and reducing school absenteeism.

The event was a very exciting celebration attended by representatives of all parties involved in this project, including MTN Uganda, representatives of the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Energy and Development, the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, KCCA, the Naguru committee, and various local leaders.

We were honoured to count on the presence of:

  • Reverend Canon Duncan Mugumya, Commissioner of Physical Education and Sports, Ministry of Education and Sports
  • Prof. Ramathan Ggoobi, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance

  • Matilde Tino, Head of Physical Education, Naguru Katali Primary School
  • Local community leaders
  • Executive teams from Xcalibur Foundation Uganda, Youth Sport Uganda, and Naguru Katali Primary School

Besides enjoying delicious local food, drinks and great conversations, this event allowed for interaction between the attendees and the children participating in the project, who showed, through various demonstrations, the effectiveness of the socio-sport methodology used at the academy. In addition, the coaches received their certificates for completing the online football and values training organised by Xcalibur Foundation and Real Madrid Foundation: “For a Real Education: Values and Sport”.

It is worth mentioning that the MTN Naguru Social Sports Academy successful launch event has been key to the Foundation’s promising start in the field of international cooperation and social development.
