“MTN Fun Day”: Solidarity Day at the MTN Naguru Social Sports Academy

MTN Uganda employees and their children, together with our project children, enjoyed a fun day of recreational and sport activities, games, inclusion, and education in values, as represented by this socioeducational programme.

To wave the holidays goodbye and welcome the new school term, Xcalibur Foundation and MTN Uganda organised a very special event: the MTN Fun Day. A friendly football tournament and a CSR initiative to reinforce key values such as social inclusion, teamwork, respect for others, and fair play. This event is part of the MTN Naguru Social Sports Academy cooperation project launched in June 2022, together with Real Madrid Foundation, MTN Uganda, and Youth Sport Uganda.

The event took place at Naguru Katali Primary School on Saturday 27th, between 14:00 and 18:00. Despite the rain, the attendees were able to enjoy a unique and fun afternoon filled with games, football, attractions, music, new friends and of course, healthy, and delicious meals to keep them energetic and strong!

The children of MTN Uganda employees were invited to participate in various friendly matches against the children of our current project: the MTN Naguru Social Sports Academy. The families of our project participants also attended, as well as MTN Uganda employees, who accompanied their sons and daughters. Parents were particularly involved in the event and were very appreciative of the impact it had on the youngsters. Likewise, the parents and caregivers of the project children emphasised the positive effects they saw in their kids: better self-esteem, more respect, and more autonomy.

The attractions were the highlight of the day: a bouncy castle, an inflatable football pitch and two mascots! The children really enjoyed this unforgettable experience. Later, many community children and youth also joined the party. The local community leader expressed his gratitude for inviting his community to participate in such an event. He mentioned that “(…) these interactions between children from MTN Uganda and those from Naguru settlement promote lasting friendships and encourage equality through sport.”

Some of the testimonials from attendees:

“Very good job to the organisers. You have put a big smile on my son’s face and great memories in his heart – he can’t stop wearing his T-shirt, talking about the friends he has made and how good the food was! We look forward to continuing these experiences.”
Paul, Parent and MTN Uganda Employee

“Coach, I am happy to see my girl Mayi playing football with boys. I am happy with your project.”
Husna Akello, Mayi’s Mother, Project Participant

“The children in our community do not come across these play facilities often. They are very excited today thanks to you.”
